In conjunction with the unveiling of the iPhone 4S at Apple's "Let's Talk iPhone" event on October 4, it was announced that Sprint was the newest U.S. carrier of the iPhone.

It was also announced that the iPhone 4 would be downgraded to an 8GB phone and would now sell for just $99 with a two-year contract.

The iPhone 4S is priced at $199 for the 16GB, $299 for the 32GB and $399 for the 64GB with a two-year contract.

Both Apple smartphones will be equipped with Sprint's unlimited data plan.

Rumors that Sprint would be carrying the latest iPhone upon its release circled for many months prior to the unveiling. During that time, Sprint officials kept quiet about any affiliation with Apple.

However, recent reports indicate that Sprint has struck up a daring $20 million deal with Apple to buy 30.5 million iPhones over the next four years, regardless of whether they sell.

Commentators note that the network stands to see a loss of approximately $1.5 billion until 2014, unless all of its approximately 52 million subscribers purchase an iPhone.

The popularity of the iPhone 4S is currently in question as many who were anticipating the iPhone 5 are considering the 4S simply an upgrade of the iPhone 4.

Verizon is expected to ship its 8GB iPhone 4 on October 13.

AT&T hasn’t revealed when it would release its 8GB iPhone 4.
