iPhone 5 Verizon Sales Impress in Q3 2012

Verizon recently released its quarterly financials this week that showed the carrier selling 6.8 million smartphones during Q3 2012.

Out of this number, 3.1 million were iPhones, with the iPhone 5 making up 21 percent of that amount. Google's Android-powered smartphones accounted for around 3.7 million out of Verizon's Q3 sales.

Other platforms such as RIM's Blackberry and Windows Phones also have to be taken into consideration, however, the two probably do not account for much.

The iPhone 5's sales numbers on Verizon are quite impressive, as the smartphone was only available for a little over a week's time. Over one fifth of Apple's total iPhone sales for Q3 were iPhone 5s. To be more specific, the carrier reported that it sold around 650,000 iPhone 5s during the last few days of the quarter.

Verizon released this information in a conference call shortly after its earnings release. The 3.1 million Apple related activations showed an increase in iPhone sales for the carrier which were at 2.7 million the previous quarter.

AT&T and Sprint will also be reporting their financial results next week. It will be interesting to see how well the iPhone 5 fared on those carriers and if it toppled the Android platform in terms of smartphone sales.

With strong players such as the Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note, and HTC One X, it will be a bit tougher for Apple to outdo Android on AT&T.

The iPhone 5 was released by Apple at the end of last month and sold between 5-8 million units during its launch weekend.

The device features a new 4-inch Retina display with LTE connectivity and smaller lightning dock connector.

Its frame is also thinner than the iPhone 4S and the device is light and easy to carry around.
