'iPhone 7' going back to glass-on-glass technology in a bid to become bezel-free.

With just days to go for the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus launch, rumours have shifted to the iPhone 7 that is scheduled to launch sometime in 2016. The latest rumour is based on a report out of 'Digitimes', a Taiwanese publication. It came out with a report that Apple is going to reintroduce the glass-on-glass touchscreen technology for the upcoming iPhone 7 in 2016.

Apple had gone in for the in-cell touch panels from its iPhone 5 till present. In-cell touch panels are being utilised by most smartphones today as it makes the smartphones thinner by reducing the thickness of the display unit. This is done by merging the touch panel with the display glass. This also makes room for larger batteries.

As we all know, the latest iPhone 6S and the iPhone 6S Plus will feature cutting edge hardware and it goes without saying that the iPhone 7 will be adding to this. Apple seems to be moving towards cameras with 4K resolutions but the current in-cell touchscreen technology might have some problems in supporting the 4K resolutions. Also, Apple is facing reduced sensitivity towards the edges because of the in-cell touchscreen technology. It might be to solve these problems that Apple might be reverting to the glass-on-glass technology.

Digitimes has further reported that Apple has contracted both Corning and Asahi to do the groundwork and that they have already sent the samples to Apple. Both Corning and Asahi obviously must have come up with the next generation of the glass-on-glass touchscreen, meaning the newest ultra thin glass-on glass touchscreen. This is the new and improved version that will help Apple resolve the resolution and bezel limits.

With the ultra thin glass-on-glass technology, sensitivity will not be an issue as this supports edge-to-edge display screens. Apple will be able to introduce new features that increase resolution and also make the displays bezel-free.
