The film will take on the form of a biographical picture about Griselda Blanco, dubbed "The Cocaine Grandmother," who earned the reputation of the most powerful female drug cartel leader in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s.

Blanco, who revolutionized the drug trade in Miami during her day, was known to smuggle around 300 kilos of cocaine every month into the States, and was largely involved in the ensuing Miami drug war, or the Cocaine Cowboy Wars, when cocaine supplanted marijuana supplies.

Booming business

All the while, the queenpin's business was raking in $800,000,000 per month. She was also known as a black widow, having murdered her two husbands, and did not hesitate to use violence if necessary.

Even after being captured by the US authorities in 1985, Blanco kept the wheels going right inside prison. Of course, it being a biopic, the ending is not ambiguous--Blanco was shot dead in her hometown in Colombia.

Lopez expressed her excitement and pleasure to play the infamous Blanco on the screen. The NBC Shades of Blue star commented that she has been fascinated with the lives of "corrupt and complicated women for years," and teaming up with the network is the perfect platform to tell her story.

Another movie

The international music and film star will also be producing the film alongside her company, Nuyorican Productions, with Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina in tow. LBI Entertainment's Julie Yorn and Rick Yorn, as well as Magic Mike starAlex Pettyfer, Priscilla Porianda, and Patrick Walmsley, will also co-produce.

As for the premium cabler, this is the second HBO project that will topbill a famous star, having first announced Oprah Winfrey in the tv adaptation of "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks."
