Jada Pinkett Smith: 'I Have Wisdom, my Heart and Conscience as Tools to Overcome Obstacles'

One day after turning 42, actress, singer, and author Jada Pinkett Smith revealed a great deal about her past and the "many demons" she battled as she grew up.

"Yesterday I turned one year older, and I reflected on where I have been and where I am now," the actress posted on Facebook. "What I learned about myself is this, when I was younger I was not a good problem solver, meaning I had a very difficult time with dealing with problems in life. I had many addictions, of several kinds, to deal with my life issues, but today at 42, I have my wisdom, my heart and my conscience as the only tools to overcome life's inevitable obstacles."

Pinkett Smith has enjoyed a great deal of success as an actress; she began on the small-screen, with guest appearances on multiple TV shows. However, Pinkett Smith moved on to the large screen and has starred in "Reign Over Me" and "Ali." She most recently took on the role of Dr. Christina Hawthorne and enjoyed great success on the series.

"I have become a good problem solver with those tools, and I am damn proud. Thank you for all the love that was given to me for my birthday this year. What I hope is that we all continue to gain healthy understanding that life is really about solving problems and also about us learning to become masters at solving them. Happy Thursday and… thank you for being here," Pinkett Smith concluded.

She married actor Will Smith in 1997 and together they have two children, Jaden and Willow, who have enjoyed success in the entertainment industry as well. Will has another son, Willard "Trey" Smith III, from a previous marriage.

Not only does the family work in the entertainment industry, Pinkett Smith and Will have founded the Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation, which focuses on inner-city youth and families. The Foundation provides much-needed support to these people. Their fame helps bring awareness to those in need.
