Fans apparently have to wait a bit longer for the next Pandora universe film to hit the big screens.

A report from The Hollywood Reporter pointed out director James Cameron's statement on Wednesday indicating that the release date of the next sequels of his highly-successful "Avatar" is pushed back to late 2017.

"Avatar 2" was slated to open in 2016 but said that the writing process has been "very involved," making the target date a bit too ambitious.

"There's a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films that you don't get when you're making a stand-alone film," Cameron said.

To help him with this enormous cinematic project is a team of writers including Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Shane Salerno, Amanda Silver, and others, EmpireOnline reported. Cameron plans to complete the scripts by the end of the month.

"We're writing three simultaneously. And we've done that so that everything tracks throughout the three films. We're not just going to do one and then make up another one and another one after that," the "True Lies" the director continued. "And parallel with that, we're doing all the design. So we've designed all the creatures and the environments."

James Cameron's 2009 "Avatar" is considered the highest-grossing film in history. Having won three Academy Awards, the Sam Worthington-led movie earned nearly $2.8 billion in box-office.
