Jillian Michaels' 'Shape' Feature Causes Stir; Trainer Reveals Her Body Insecurity

Jillian Michaels, best known for her role as the tough-as-nails trainer on NBC's "The Biggest Loser" has just turned 40 and decided to celebrate by showing off her physique in the latest issue of "Shape" magazine.

"I won't lie. This birthday was hard," she told the magazine. "But when I think back on my 20s and 30s, I look better now than I ever have."

Michaels chose to pose nude for the magazine, which is quite a change of pace for the mother of two who often talks about her insecurities. During her podcast, for example, she spoke at length about her insecurities surrounding a certain body part – her derriere. However, she set a goal to get in shape by her birthday and hit that goal, which is part of why she chose to do the "Shape" shoot.

The trainer also spoke about her family, which includes partner Heidi Rhoades, son Phoenix and daughter Lukensia (Lu). She says that having children has drastically altered her life and her outlook on things, as well as prioritized potential projects she wants to work on. In the "Shape" article, she speaks about the various parts of her body and why she wants them to be strong.

"My best reason for having strong arms is because I love to pick up my kids," she explained. "Having a solid core gives you a solid foundation and helps with injury prevention, which is critical to good health. Metaphorically speaking, [having a strong back] means I can carry a lot of responsibility on my shoulders – and I do – for my family, friends and fans."

Of course, at the heart of the feature was the main reason that Michaels encourages others to get, and stay, in shape.

"There are so many good reasons to exercise," she noted. "It doesn't matter how profound or superficial your motives are, as long as it's something that matters to you."
