John Legend on Kanye West's Grammys Controversy on Social Media, Says Beck is A True Artist

In a post on Instagram last week, John Legend wants to make it clear that while he thought his friend Kanye West's Grammys prank was harmless, it doesn't mean that he necessarily shares the rapper's opinion regarding West's statement that Beck should "respect artistry" and give his award to Beyonce.

It can be recalled that West recreated his infamous mic-grabbing stunt from the VMAs at the Grammys last Sunday when it was announced that Beck won Album of the Year. West made for the stage, but turned around and went back to his seat.

Legend's post began: "I want to clarify my thoughts on Kanye's actions at the Grammys last Sunday. First of all, Kanye is my friend. He believed in me years ago when very few did, and I wouldn't be here without his support. That doesn't mean that we'll agree on everything, but it does mean that I am grateful to him."

"In my original comments to Us Weekly, I said that when Kanye walked up on stage, mimicking his interruption of Taylor Swift's VMA acceptance speech, then turned around as if he was just playing, most of the room including me thought it was funny … When I said that was funny and people should lighten up about it, that's what I meant. I wasn't referring to Kanye's comments after the show."

"I disagree with those comments," he continued. "Beck is indeed a true artist's artist … While his win may have been a surprise to many, it's not because he's not a great artist deserving of recognition. All of the other artists, including Beyonce, are incredible in their own right."

"I respect [the Grammys] decision and congratulate Beck on this outstanding accomplishment," he added.

At the Grammy's, the "All of Me" singer and his wife, Chrissy Teigen, were seen in the company of West and his wife, Kim Kardashian West. They also went on a double date right after the Supebowl, and Teigen even posted a picture of them hanging out at a Waffle House.

In an interview with TheDailyBeast, Legend said that they definitely enjoyed their low key double date.

"We thought it would be a good moment to photograph because it was an interesting juxtaposition," he said.
