Singer John Mayer has written a song called "Shadow Days" which is reportedly about finally getting over his ex-girlfriend Jennifer Aniston, whom he broke up with at least two years ago.

"Shadow Days is about Jen. It really took him a long time to get over her. He really loved her a lot," a source told Us Weekly.

"He wrote the song as a farewell letter knowing [Jennifer] would hear it. Ultimately he's done a lot of self reflection though and he realizes they weren't right for each other," the insider added.

The song, which is off of his "Born and Raised" album, gives listeners a closer look inside his rocky relationship with the former "Friends" actress.

"You find yourself alone … I found myself in pieces / On my hotel floor / Hard times help me see / I'm a good man with a good heart / Had a tough time, got a rough start / And I finally learned to let it go," Mayer soulfully sings.

The 34-year-old began dating Aniston in February 2008, and the couple dated on and off, finally splitting for good in March 2009.

The "Gravity" singer also briefly dated singer Jessica Simpson and actress Jennifer Love Hewitt. According to new reports, he wants to steer clear of celebrity love interests.

"He's looking for a nice, non famous girl he can relate to … He loved [Jennifer and Jessica] both but it really affected him emotionally and it wasn't worth it," the confidante said.

Mayer, an occasional philanthropist, has kept a low profile since his controversial interview with Playboy Magazine in 2010 in which he was asked whether African-American female fans throw themselves at him.

"I don't think I open myself to it. My d--- is sort of like a white supremacist. I've got a Benetton heart and a f----- David Duke c---. I'm going to start dating separately from my d---," Mayer said in a response that was deemed as racist by his fans.

"I always thought Holly Robinson Peete was gorgeous. Every white dude loved Hilary from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. And Kerry Washington. She's super hot and she's also white-girl crazy. Kerry Washington would break your heart like a white girl," he added.

Mayer, who is reportedly single, also made derogatory remarks about his love life with both Simpson and Aniston during the same interview, which led to some fans boycotting his music.
