John Paul Introduced Information Technology to the Catholic Church
The Internet was introduced to the Catholic Church during the pontificate of Pope John Paul, bringing the church into the era of information technology.
The Vaticans website has resources such as texts of papal speeches, pronouncement, an online library and other church document that are accessible for visitors.
After the death of the Pope, the site developed a section called "Vacancy of the Apostolic See." Documents include the text of the papal death certificate and the document from 1996 of John Paul outlining revised rules for choosing a new pope.
The first pope to use e-mail was John Paul. People were encouraged to send him emails to comfort the pope during his last few weeks.
Email was also used by the Vatican to inform reporters of the death of the Pope.
