One of Hollywood's longest standing couples, actors Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, have officially split after 14 years together.

The confirmation came from a statement released to Entertainment Tonight on Tuesday by Depp's publicist, which read: "Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis have amicably separated. Please respect their privacy and, more importantly, the privacy of their children."

The couple never married and share two children -- Lily-Rose, 13, and Jack, 9. They first got together in June 1998 in Paris and lived together many years in Plan-de-la-Tour in southern France before relocating to Los Angeles. It was in LA, People magazine reported, that they started drifting apart. While once they seemed very close, Depp and Paradis have not appeared together on the red carpet in over a year.

Rumors about the split between Depp, 48 and Paradis, 39, began earlier this year in another People magazine article published in January, in which one unidentified inside source claimed that the couple had split, remarking that the situation was "so sad."

Depp, who starred most recently in Tim Burton's "Dark Shadows" remake, had often commented on the happiness he enjoys living in France with his partner and children. Their life together "has given me everything. A marvelous family and also an equilibrium which I missed enormously," the actor has said.

Paradis, who also works as a model and singer, has explained that the couple had such a perfect relationship that they never felt the need to marry, despite spending 14 years together.

"I love the romance of 'let's get married,' but then, when you have it so perfect ... I mean, I'm more married than anybody can be – we have two kids. Maybe one day, but it's something I can really do without," the actress once told Elle magazine.

Paradis has also said that she admires "an endless list" of things about Depp.

"We understand that, if we want our relationship to continue, we must give each other space, allow each other to go off on our own, and trust each other. Not everyone is lucky enough to be given space and trust," she remarked in another interview.
