Joni Mitchell Health Condition Latest News: Joni Not In a Coma, Friend Allegedly Files for Conservatorship

Following her hospitalization last month after being discovered unconscious in her home, a statement on Joni Mitchell's official website countered rumors that the artist is in a coma and is not responsive. The statement said that the Canadian singer-songwriter is "not in a coma."

The 71-year old artist is expected to fully recover soon. The statement added: "Joni is still in the hospital – but she comprehends, she's alert and she has her full senses."

This is contrary to earlier reports about the singer being unconscious and unresponsive.

According to a report in CNN, a close friend of the artist, Leslie Morris, filed a petition in court to become the artist's conservator. Morris, who is said to be a friend of 44 years, was allegedly filing for authority to "make care decisions for Joni once she leaves the hospital," which may be only be done in the absence of 24-hour doctor care.

An earlier report came out in various other publications that the reason cited in Morris' petition was because Mitchell "remains unconscious and unable to make any responses, and is therefore unable to provide for any of her personal needs."

This same report also claimed that the petition was supported by a doctor's declaration that "the singer will be unable to attend a court hearings for the next four to six months."

The official statement on the website and a statement from Mitchell's publicist is said to clear the discrepancies in the reports, with the website providing the "accurate" information about the artist's health.

Mitchell was rushed to the UCLA Medical Center on March 31 and given intensive care treatment. Her condition is said to have improved, and according a BBC report, she is "in good spirits."

The singer-songwriter is known for jazz and folk hits like "Big Yellow Taxi" and "Chelsea Morning." She was also inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.
