Josh Brolin Talks About Playing Marvel Characters Cable and Thanos

Josh Brolin is set to appear in two Marvel films next year — the "Avengers: Infinity War" where he will play the main villain Thanos, and "Deadpool 2" where he will play the comedic mercenary Cable. Earlier this week, the actor talked about his upcoming roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and revealed how he ended up playing Thanos and Cable.

Shortly after Marvel confirmed that Brolin would play Thanos in "Avengers: Infinity War," the studio announced that he was also cast as Cable for the "Deadpool" sequel. Although the actor had been part of the MCU since 2014, he has never appeared in two different films to portray two different roles in the same year. Back in 2015, he appeared in "Guardians of the Galaxy," and in 2016, he was in "Avengers: Age of Ultron." He played Thanos in both films.

According to Brolin, the opportunity to play Cable in "Deadpool 2" came as a surprise, not just for fans, but for him, too. When Marvel announced that they were looking for someone to play Cable, Brolin's name was not among the frontrunners. Instead, fans speculated that it could be Michael Shannon, Brad Pitt, or Pierce Brosnan. Brolin said when the role was offered to him, he was actually looking to film "George and Tammy," but his plans changed completely when the project was delayed.

"We were supposed to start May 8th with Roger Deakins shooting and all this kind of stuff, and then it fell through at the last second. And right after it fell through, this 'Deadpool' thing came in and they said, 'Are you interested in doing this?' At first I was like, I don't know. I want to do 'George and Tammy,'" he said. Brolin said his wife still asked him to read the "Deadpool 2" script until he was ultimately convinced to grab the role.

"Avengers: Infinity War" will hit theaters on May 4, 2018, while "Deadpool 2" will be released on June 1, 2018.
