'Jurassic World 2' News, Update: Sequel to Hit Theaters by 2018

After becoming one of the highest grossing films in history, following James Cameron's "Titanic" (no. 2) and "Avatar" (no. 1), Colin Trevorrow's "Jurassic World" is now confirmed to get a sequel which will be released in June 2018, according to reports.

The movie, which opened in theaters in June, earned roughly about 1.5 billion U.S. dollars in worldwide ticket sales so it shouldn't come as a surprise when Universal Pictures greenlighted the project.

The sequel is slated to see Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard reprising their roles as Owen Grady and Claire Dearing, respectively.

Trevorrow, on the other hand, will be passing on the helmer's torch to someone as the report only indicates him returning as a co-writer for the film with Derek Connolly.

Franchise creator and director of the first Jurassic film in 1993, Steven Spielberg, will exec produce with Frank Marshall as producer.

Marshall recalled the preparations that he and Trevorrow made in setting up the film.

"There are a lot of people that really want this to be real. We did our research. Colin [Trevorrow] and I went down to Orlando and toured the Universal theme park down there and obviously the one here in LA but we really went down there to see the operations and how they kept track of where people were and what information was on the screen," he told Collider. "And then we kind of expanded on it and see what we thought something would be like if you had an up and running dinosaur theme park."
