'Just Cause 3' News Update: Game Map Biggest Ever in History of Gaming

Game developer Avalanche Studios, the developer behind the upcoming open-world action adventure game "Just Cause 3," recently shared details about the game, saying that the game's map will span over 400 square miles, according to a report in IGN. The game is reportedly set in the fictional island of Medici, found in the Mediterranean.

This tidbit was shared through the developer's Dev Diary video where the team discussed how vast the game's map will be. The game's open world will span approximately 400 square miles and will have three major regions. The team members, including the game director and one of its art directors, talked about what each region will contain.

Region 1 will consist of agricultural areas and "a medley of wealthy and poor towns," while Region 2 will be composed of military bases and "very poor fishing towns." The third region on the world is mostly forest, a "mountainous wilderness region." According to the developers, one of the main considerations for choosing an island environment was how they wanted an environment where the main character, Rico, could get "very quickly into the air," thus resulting in the game's "very vertical environment."

Although Medici is a fictional Mediterranean island, it is still based on a combination of different Mediterranean locations, with oceans surrounding an island with mountains and cliffs.

Square Enix, as part of the game's marketing program, is said to be giving away an island to whoever leads the game after 90 days of its launch date. It is not yet known what island and where it will be but it is reportedly valued at around $50,000 US dollars.

"Just Cause 3" is the third installment in the "Just Cause" series. It is a sequel to the 2010 release "Just Cause 2" and follows protagonist Rico Rodriguez as he tries to save his homeland Medici from being controlled by a military dictator. The game is set for release on December 1, 2015 for PC and current generation consoles.
