'Justice League' Spoilers, Cast Updates, Previews: Henry Cavill Teases Out Black Superman Suit

Black is the new black, after all

We last saw Superman at the end of "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice", having sacrificed himself to kill Doomsday and ended up getting impaled. It was a dark end for such a heroic character - and now, that just might be more literal than fans think.

It has only been five months since the last movie, but actor Henry Cavill teased the Man of Steel's return on Instagram. He posted a photo of the superhero suit he will presumably be wearing in the upcoming DC film, Justice League (which will be released a year away from now).

What is the catch?

It's not the iconic blue-red suit we are all familiar with; it's black.

So, what does this mean for the Son of Krypton? It's not like fans expected him to stay dead, of course, but spoilers ahead: this could mean that Justice League will take on the "Death of Superman" arc.

For comic book fans who are familiar with Zack Snyder's treatment of the DC-verse, the black suit would ring a bell; Superman sometimes wore an obsidian ensemble during his comic book run. But, the most important instance where he had done so comes as a relevant arc to the post-"Batman v. Superman" universe.

Looking back at 'Death of Superman'

In the 1993 "Death of Superman" arc, Superman had to battle it out with Doomsday, where it ended up having him sacrifice his life to save humanity. It was something that the BvS film faithfully kept. In truth, however, Superman wasn't actually dead. Instead, he succumbed to a deep coma after seriously decimating his power.

As he went into a deep sleep in the regeneration matrix in the Fortress of Solitude, the robots had him dressed in a silver/black suit. The suit was specifically designed to absorb the sun's rays faster, allowing the weakened superhero to heal quicker and make his comeback in the fight versus evil.

So yes, perhaps Superman's suit is merely a touch of healing-power material and not some harbinger of gloom-and-doom for everyone's favorite superhero. There is also a possibility that Brutaal, an evil Superman clone powered by Darseid and was already teased out in the BvS as one of the nightmare supervillains in the DC Extended Universe, will come out.

Cavill will fly back as Superman on November 17, 2017 in the DC film, Justice League.
