Justin Bieber fans were in a frenzy on Tuesday after the pop singer joked about retiring in the near future.

Social networking sites were abuzz with sad tweets after Bieber, 19, told a Los Angeles radio station that he would retire after the upcoming release of his album "Journals" next week. Insiders insist that Bieber was joking and that he is not actually retiring.

"After the new album, I'm actually retiring man. I'm retiring," Bieber told Power 106 host Kurt Alexander, better known as Big Boy, who was left stunned, according to DailyMail UK.

The full interview is set to air Wednesday however video snippets show Bieber elaborating on his shocking statement.

"I'm just gonna take some time, I think I'm probably gonna quit music," he said. "I want to grow as an artist and I'm taking a step out, I want my music to mature."

Fans of the teenage heartthrob flocked to Twitter to express their grief over the comments, as many appeared to be unaware that he was joking.

"He better be kidding about this, he can't retire what am i gonna do with my life if he does," one distressed fan tweeted.

"if he retires I will literally retire my life," another troubling tweet read.

"Im going on a hunger strike until Justin changes his mind #crying," one user wrote.
