Justin Bieber, 18-year-old singer, was recently voted the Canadian Newsmaker of The Year.

Bieber's title was granted by the Ipsos Reid survey results that were conducted online on behalf of Postmedia News and Global Television. John Wright, senior-vice president of Ipsos Reid, explained that the survey was taken from people in different parts of Canada.

"It's a mixed bag because you're dealing with different parts of the country that have their own newsmaking machine and events," Wright said in an Ottawa Citizen report.

The Ipsos Reid survey polled 1,021 adult Canadians was conducted online. While Bieber was recognized for being a top newsmaker in Canada, he also had a busy year making headlines globally in 2012.

In 2012, Bieber spoke out against bullying while lending his voice to a "Bully" documentary in the song "Born to Be Somebody" that premiered last March.

Bieber told HLN Network why it was important for people to take a stance against bullies.

"I was bullied. Most people in their lifetime have been at some point," Bieber said. "I think it's about time that people start making a change."

Last May the singer made headlines when he held up notorious pugilist Floyd Mayweather's belts and admitted to being mentored by the undefeated fighter. Although many seemed surprised, Bieber opened up about his admiration for the fighter in V magazine last January.

"Everyone wants you to be on top, and as soon as you're there -- like Floyd Mayweather, he's the best boxer in the world. Now he is a champion," Bieber told the publication. "Every time he goes to a fight now, people are like, 'He's going to lose this time,' and then he wins. And the next time they say, 'He's going to lose,' again ...Every time he wins. And people aren't ever going to know that he's a champ."

While the singer made headlines when he graduated from high school, he explained why doing so was so important despite his prominent status in society.

"That was something my mom really wanted me to do, so I had to do it for her," Bieber told the British publication Telegraph. "I mean, this kind of lifestyle has given me a different perspective on life."

Although Bieber has appeared in countless headlines throughout the year, no topic seemed as popular as his relationship status with love interest and entertainer Selena Gomez. In recent months, rumors swirled about the pair no longer being an item, but a picture surfaced of the two canoodling on Christmas Eve recently.

Last November, Bieber told Oprah Winfrey about the dynamic of his relationship with Gomez.

"I am all about genuine people, and I feel like she's just one of the most genuine people," Bieber said in the Winfrey interview that aired Nov 25. "She just has a good heart and I can talk to her about anything."
