"American Idol" contestant, Katharine McPhee could be making a bigger name for herself in the near future with her new NBC show "Smash." Prior to her debut, the actress landed an unexpected, positive review from GQ magazine. Now after the show has been unveiled, positive feedback seems to only have grown.
GQ writer David Gordon, has overcome his jazz hand phobia and fear of musicals for long enough to accept that he might have a sincere liking for the new show "Smash" that debuted Monday, starring Katharine McPhee.
Gordon writes that he was given a copy of the show to watch. "It was my job to watch it. I did not. The thing is, I am allergic to jazz hands. When people break into song for no reason, I break into hives."
However Gordon didn't much live up to his resolve as he later stated, "After twenty minutes, to my great horror and even greater perplexity, I realized I liked it."
The new show, which followed the season premiere of "The Voice", revolves around the making of a musical based around Marilyn Monroe. The show features Debra Messing, Anjelica Huston, and Broadway star Megan Hilty.
Entertainment Weekly said, "this glitzy, refreshingly earnest show's potential is nothing short of thrilling TV." The Numbers reported that "Smash" scored the highest 18-49 rating for any episode of a regular 10:00 p.m. drama on ABC, CBS or NBC on any night of the week so far this season. The rating is based on adults aged 18-49.

Gordon joked with McPhee about trying to avoid having to watch an episode, McPhee responded light-heartedly. "Yeah, this sounds very familiar. Like most of the other very straight men that I've spoken with," the actress said. Gordon added that now as a penance he will be attempting to encourage other men to follow suit and watch her show. He also admitted however, that is was his wife that piqued his interest in the first place.
"It was my wife-intrigued by the prospect of Smash's grown-up Glee-ness who finally broke the impasse," Gordon said.
Entertainment Weekly blogger, geek, also compared the two musicals. "Loved this. So much better than Glee," geek wrote. "By a mile. There's something effortless about this show. It doesn't seem to be forcing anything. It just glides."
