Katie Couric 'Today' Show Comeback Possible?

Katie Couric revealed that she considered reassuming her position as co-anchor on "Today" despite the recent turmoil surrounding the morning show.

It has been seven years since Couric appeared beside Matt Lauer on the "Today" show, but NBC producers still covet the 57-year-old anchor.

While talking to Howard Stern on Sirius XM radio on Tuesday, Couric admitted that NBC made "cautious overtures" about her returning to the show.

"There were some possible overtures for me to go back to the 'Today' show, but they evaporated," said the journalist. "For me, that was the best job."

In recent months, the "Today" show has famously struggled to captivate large audiences following controversy over its former co-anchor Ann Curry. The former anchor underwent a messy departure from the show before reports indicated that Lauer played a role in her departure.

Regardless of the NBC morning show's struggles, Couric said that she and Lauer had even "talked about possibly teaming up and doing a show at some point," while speaking to Stern.

Furthermore, Couric fielded Stern's questions about being romantically interested in Lauer, who remains unpopular with the public.

"You know what? I actually had a little crush on Matt when he was the local news anchor on WNBC," said Couric. "I thought he was so funny and so quick."

Lauer admitted that the past year has been challenging on the morning show.

"I'm doing well," Lauer told Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show" earlier this month. "It's been an interesting year."

Many reports, including a book by New York Times reporter Brian Stelter, indicate that Lauer colluded with NBC execs to get Curry fired from the show.

"The fact of the matter is, millions of people still invite us into their homes to deliver the news," Lauer continued while speaking to Leno. "I am not a guy who complains … I love this job, I really do."

Lauer's current co-anchor on the "Today Show" is Savannah Guthrie.

Meanwhile, Couric has her own syndicated talk show "Katie" on ABC.
