Katy Perry and John Mayer have reportedly split after less than one year of dating with sources citing busy work schedules as the cause of their break up.
The pair, who began dating in July, appeared to be in good spirits during the 55th Grammy Awards just recently in February.
They attended the ceremony together hand in hand, however weeks later they decided to end their relationship, according to Us magazine.
"It's sad," a source told Us while alluding to the break-up being temporary.
"It's not over until it's over. You have to see how things play out," a separate source said. "She's leaving the window open. They have both been so focused on work."
Mayer, 35, reportedly helped Perry, 28, overcome the emotional challenges of her 2011 divorce from actor Russell Brand.
The singers split briefly in August although they rekindled the relationship months later.
In December Mayer, who has dated various Hollywood starlets, was linked to "Bachelorette" star Emily Maynard despite his relationship with the "Hot and Cold" singer. A source claimed that the reality TV star was flirting with Mayer via text.
"I'm shocked he'd be talking to Emily, but she is gorgeous. I don't know how she does it, but she's got all of these guys chasing after her," a source previously told Life & Style magazine.
"Emily is bored out of her mind living in Charlotte, N.C.," continues the insider. "So she sits at home and flirts with guys via text. That's what got her in trouble with her ex fiancé, Jef Holm."
Mayer, who is also an occasional philanthropist, previously dated actress Jennifer Aniston and singer Jessica Simpson - both of whom he publicly insulted after breaking up with them. He also dated country music star Taylor Swift, who released "Dear John" after their break up, a song about a man mistreating his girlfriend.
Perry, who finalized her divorce from Russell Brand in February, reportedly dated Mayer briefly in 2009.
