Katy Perry 'Chained to the Rhythm' Music Video News: Lyrics and Visuals Have Deeper Social Meaning

Music is definitely a universal language that knows no boundaries and can make an even more powerful impact than words. Katy Perry definitely knows how to do this in the most subtle way possible with her music video for her newest single, "Chained to the Rhythm."

In true Katy Perry style, the video is filled with flashy choreography and over-the-top costumes. Yet beneath the colorful hues and the wonderful smiles that everyone dons in the seemingly perfect and fun-filled carnival, there lies a deeper message that is just screaming to be heard.

At first, one would think that man is "living in a bubble" that is technology and social media. This was shown as individuals were just looking at their tablets when they should be living the moment, making them miss the huge signs that spell danger. It goes further as a roller coaster goes into a tunnel filled with symbols for likes, angry faces and laughter, and it's like the only things people see.

It gets even more real in the following scenes. A huge signage that says "American Dream Drop" at first looks like an innocent name for a ride, but then when one tries to analyze current events, it all becomes too familiar. Katy tries to pick a beautiful rose only to be pricked, which is a great metaphor to seeing something as pretty as it is, only to discover it's not what it seems.

Perhaps one of the more striking messages delivered was when a crowd put on their 3D glasses and bobbed to the rhythm, and only Katy awoke and realized what Skip Marley was saying. The lyrics "It is my desire. Break down the walls to connect, inspire. Up in your high place, liars. Time is ticking for the empire," was just the start of what sounded to be a warning.

Fans of the singer were quick to pick up the hints, and they knew exactly what she was trying to say. With more than five million views as of this writing, she is definitely heard loud and clear.

Did she intentionally place what appeared to be political innuendos in the video? This is just speculation, but it definitely gives viewers a moment to think and say "Touché Katy, touché."
