Katy Perry is describing the meaning behind the new songs found on her latest album "Prism," including the ones about her ex-husband Russell Brand.

The album, which hit stores Oct. 22, covers painful details of the singer's divorce from Brand in December 2011. Instead of hiding behind her music, Perry is talking about lyrics on "Prism," and previously revealed that the song "By the Grace of God" referred to her thoughts of suicide in the midst the divorce.

Furthermore, the 28-year-old elaborated on the excruciating divorce in an interview with the U.K.'s Sunday Times this week.

"I was in bed for about two weeks," she admitted. "Yes. It hurt a lot, I got a good knock."

Brand infamously sent his wife at the time a text message asking for a divorce in Dec. 2011 after 14 months of marriage.

In addition to her heartbreak over the split, Perry admitted a struggle with self-identity- another issue covered extensively on "Prism."

"Unfortunately, although I had a lot of outward self-identity, I didn't have the inner kind, I hadn't built that up," the chanteuse explained to the Sunday Times. "My self-worth was in someone else's hands, which is never a good idea, because it can be taken from you at any time. And it was, and it was shattered."

Meanwhile, Perry has found love again in John Mayer whom she had known for a while ahead of their romance.

"I'm actually dating my crush," the "Roar" singer told W magazine recently. "I had a crush on [Mayer] for a long time, and it just so happens we fit together great."

The musical pair have been dating for over a year, and are widely believed to be headed toward marriage.

"Everyone knows it's just a question of when John will propose," said a friend of Mayer's speaking to Us Weekly.

As for Perry's split from Brand and everything that ensued, she told W magazine, "Everything happens for a reason."
