Stephen Hawking, the famed British scientist, made headlines earlier this week when he referred to heaven, or the afterlife, as a “fairy story for people afraid of the dark” during an interview with Britain’s Guardian newspaper.

Now, actor Kirk Cameron is making headlines with his response.

“To say anything negative about Stephen Hawking is like bullying a blind man,” Cameron told E! News. “He has an unfair disadvantage, and that gives him a free pass on some of his absurd ideas. Professor Hawking is heralded as ‘the genius of Britain,’ yet he believes in the scientific impossibility that nothing created everything and that life sprang from non-life.”

Hawking has an incurable motor neuron disease that has left him nearly completely paralyzed.

He did the interview with the Guardian before his lecture entitled “Why Are We Here?” at the Google Zeitgeist meeting in London this week. The article said he planned to argue that tiny quantum fluctuations in the very early universe became the seeds from which galaxies, stars and ultimately human life emerged.

“Science predicts that many different kinds of universe will be spontaneously created out of nothing,” Hawking said. “It is a matter of chance which we are in.”

Cameron commented, “Why should anyone believe Mr. Hawking’s writings if he cannot provide evidence for his unscientific belief that out of nothing, everything came?"

Cameron, a former atheist, is an outspoken evangelist who may best be known for his previous role on ABC's "Growing Pains." Most recently, he starred in the inspirational film, "Fireproof."
