'Law & Order: SVU' Season 19 Spoilers: Benson to Reunite With a Former Flame

Benson (Mariska Hargitay) may rekindle her romance with ex-boyfriend and former colleague Brian Cassidy (Dean Winters) in the next season of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit."

New showrunner Michael Chernuchin told The Hollywood Reporter that Cassidy's return will shake things up in the Special Victims Unit, especially on Benson's side. He is set to appear in multiple episodes starting in the season premiere. According to Chernuchin, there is a possibility that Benson and Cassidy will consider giving their romance another chance. After her breakup with Captain Tucker (Robert John Burke), Benson has remained single. As for Cassidy, he will probably not pursue the lieutenant if he was otherwise involved with another woman.

Meanwhile, Benson is set to encounter more challenges as a single mother to her son, Noah. Chernuchin teased that now that the boy is a bit older, he will start demanding more of her attention. This will put Benson in a difficult situation as she finds herself caught between motherhood and her work in the SVU.

"Noah's getting older now so he deserves having a mother home a little longer. If Benson spends a little too much with Noah, she's giving up something at work. And if she spends too much at work, then she's missing something with Noah," the EP said. "That's a big thing this season — how she's being torn between two worlds."

Meanwhile, Cassidy will not be the only character returning in season 19. Sam Waterston, who played prosecutor Jack McCoy for 16 seasons, will reprise his role, according to Deadline. No details have been released yet about his storyline, but McCoy will definitely be working with ADA Barba (Raúl Esparza). Then, there is the arrival of a mysterious character. Actress Brooke Shields is set to appear in a recurring role in the NBC series. Her character is said to directly affect Benson, both professionally and personally.

"Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" season 19 is expected to air on Sept. 27 at 9 p.m. EDT on NBC.
