Learning to Love Drones

The Drones are coming! The Drones are coming!

That is a fact of life. We are witnessing a revolution that scares a lot of people.

The real question that we need to be asking is, are drones as bad as some of us fear?

Almost every day we see headlines about drones. One announced that defense contractors are seeking to create a drone-testing zone in the San Diego area. Another announced that 10,000 drones will be in the air by 2020.

When we talk about drones, most people think of Predator drones, armed to the teeth and many Americans fear that idea of the government dropping missiles on Americans here in the United States.

Are the drones really that bad?

We are on the edge of a technological revolution. Drones are a part of it.

The problem so many people have is the inability to divorce the technology from the applications of the technology.

Drones are a very powerful military tool. They can go places that we might not want to send a manned aircraft. If we lose a drone, no one is that unhappy about it. Have an American plane shot down and its pilot killed or captured, then there is hell to pay.

The possibilities for drones in the future are almost unlimited. Right now we have unmanned airborne vehicles but the future will bring autonomous vehicles. These will be vehicles that not only fly but travel on the highways.

Imagine for a moment these vehicles. They exist already. In California, driverless cars are being used and the military hopes to deploy autonomous vehicles by 2015. Such technology will certainly work its way into civilian use the way the GPS system or the Internet has.

Can you imagine eliminating fatal traffic accidents or drunk drivers?

What could airborne drones do in civilian use?

The danger we face is not from the technology, but from the application of that technology.

This is the danger we always face from new technologies. The problem is not the technologies, it is the people we put in the government. Does anyone really trust Barack Obama or any member of the Party of Treason with this technology? For that matter how much trust should we give the Republican Party with this technology.

No, of course not.

The answer is not banning the technology. The answer is replacing leftists in government and putting conservatives back in charge.

As for the future, the possibilities are exciting. Twenty years from now, drones may become as ubiquitous as the Internet, GPS systems or laptop computers.

However, it is up to real Americans to make sure our elected officials are not allowed to misuse this new technology.
