Lawyers representing Levi Aron, the self-confessed killer in the horrific Leiby Kletzky murder case, may be preparing an insanity plea in his defense, reports have suggested Monday.

“I have sincerest concerns about the defendant’s mental state and his cognitive abilities,” said Aron’s Defense Attorneys Pierre Bazile and Gerard Marrone, in a statement to inform court officials of their client’s insanity.

Aron’s attorneys believe that their client is psychologically challenged: “I can’t tell you what the nature of the disorder is,” Bazile tells Fox 5 News, “but it’s hard to believe that somebody who committed an act like that wouldn’t have a disorder.”

Bazile also told the judge that Aron “hears voices and suffers from hallucinations,” at his arraignment.

In 2006, Aron’s ex-wife Deborah Kival claimed that, “Levi was a physically abusive psycho, who needed medicine to handle a behavior disorder,” according to the New York Post.

Kival also filed a protective order in Memphis against Aron stating that he had been diagnosed with a behavior disorder and took medication for the condition.

On Thursday, Levi Aron was charged with first degree murder and the kidnapping of 8-year-old Leiby Kletzky, a Brooklyn boy whose dismembered body parts were found in a freezer and a nearby dumpster.

Levi is currently undergoing a psychiatric evaluation at Bellevue Hospital.

Levi Aron’s next court appearance will be on July 28th.
