Lenovo Announces New Phablets at IFA 2015

At the IFA 2015 in Berlin, Lenovo unveiled two new smartphones, the Phab and the Phab Plus. The names of the new devices speak for themselves – they are in fact larger than your average smartphone and are actually phablets (or phones that are also tablets). According to a report in The Verge, the phones were announced with a slew of other devices, but these new phones definitely stand out in the smartphone market.

The Phab, which is considered to be the base model, has a humungous screen at 6.98-inch but with only 720 x 1280 pixel display resolution. Under the hood, Lenovo did not reveal what type of processor it has except that it is a Qualcomm one. It only has 1 GB of RAM. Its battery however is 4,250 mAh, which is supposed to power its large display. It has a 13 megapixel rear-facing camera and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera.

The Phab Plus on the other hand, is a slightly upgraded model of the Phab. Its screen size is slightly smaller at 6.8 inches, but the device has a 1920 x 1080 pixel display resolution. Under the hood, it will sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset, paired with 2 GB of RAM. According to the report, Lenovo says that these devices are intended to "eliminate the dilemma of choosing between costly smartphones with big screens and underwhelming small tablets by offering a sweet-spot 6.8-inch device."

Both devices boast of longer battery life – up to 18 hours, according to Lenovo's calculations. The Phab Plus also has a 13 megapixel rear-facing camera and a 5 megapixel front-facing camera.

Aside from these phablets, Lenovo also launched three new phones with what the report called "weird" or not-so-standard specs. The Vibe S1 for example has, not one, but two front-facing cameras, which selfie-lovers are bound to love. One camera is 8 megapixels while another is 2 megapixels. Its processor is a MediaTek one, but it is paired with 3 GB of RAM and 160 GB of internal storage.

The two other phones are the Vibe P1 and P1m which are said to have a physical switch to shift into power-saving mode. Both phones also have humungous batteries – the P1m has a 4,000 mAh battery, while the P1 has a 5,000 mAh battery.

The two phablets and three phones are set to come out within the next few months, but in selected markets in China, the Middle East and Europe only.
