Hacked Lumia 525 and Lumia 520 Can Run Android 6.0 Marshmallow

Microsoft Lumia 525 was hacked to run a different OS: The Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

A backdoor key for Microsoft's software for their smartphones have been leaked. This has been used by hackers to hijack the Windows operating system on the Lumia 525 and Lumia 520 and made them run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow instead. These phones were never given an update for Windows 10 Mobile.

According to the Android Community, the leaked universal backdoor key on Microsoft's software was taken advantage by the hackers. Through this, bootloaders can be unlocked and accessed with the Secure Boot feature compromised.

An XDA member managed to use the backdoor to hack the Lumia 525 and Lumia 520 to run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow instead of Windows 8.0 or 8.1. The XDA member named "banmeifyouwant" revealed the hack in a series of videos showing what he did with the Nokia Lumia 525. He adds that the same thing can be done with the Lumia 520 because they practically have similar features, hardware and specs.

The Android 6.0 OS on the Lumia 525 seemed to be stably running given its 1GB RAM. However, the XDA member notes that some complications may happen if the same technique is done with the Lumia 520 because it will only have 512MB RAM.

Liliputing notes that LK bootloaders were put to replace the UEFI firmware and the Windows phone software in the Lumia 525. The XDA member also placed in a CyanogenMod13, a version of Android 6.0 Marshmallow and TWRP custom recovery.

The hacker adds that with the backdoor key, it is theoretically possible to run Nokia and Lumia devices with Android. However, the one he is working on will only work with the Lumia 525 and the Lumia 520.

According to the XDA developer last August 19 in the forums, the hacked Lumia 525 has a working display and touchscreen, but the latter needs to be calibrated. The virtual buttons of the smartphone are not working yet. There is no sound and modem, and the device cannot connect to the internet yet.

The hacker is currently making a donation pool to release an installer for the hack on Lumia 525 and Lumia 520. However, they explicitly stated that other devices will not supported.
