Lutheran students from various colleges, universities and seminaries will flock to San Diego next week to fellowship, network, worship and brainstorm, during the annual Lutheran Student Movement USA meeting.

LSM-USA is a national organization of college-aged Lutheran students who actively participate in the life and mission of the Lutheran churches on their campuses and communities. The students represent a vibrant community of young leaders within the increasingly aging mainline Lutheran churches.

For some students, the Dec. 28 to Jan. 1 gathering will offer a chance to get more involved with hot-topic issues that affect the modern-day church. Workshops and speakers on some sessions will focus on how immigrants and migrant workers, poverty, torture, border tensions, creation care, and global service possibilities.

For others, the annual meeting will be a place to network with others who have the same interests.

"LSM-USA is a great place to meet people from around the country, to participate in worship and small groups and build a community," said Rebecca Sorensen, LSM-USA intern at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

This year, the meeting follows the theme, “Out of the Boat and Into the Water: A Faith Immersion,” with the emphasis on Matthew 14: 25-27. Students can participate in Bible studies, prayer sessions, business meetings and plenary sessions on the topic.

The conference will also feature opportunities to serve the community. Students will collect building materials from a demolished building in the area to ship to Mexico where the materials will be used to build an orphanage. Other students will participate in workshops led by non-profit organizations who can teach ways to get involved with local service projects. All students are also being asked to bring used clothing with them for a clothing drive sponsored by the LSM National Council.

About 250 students are expected to attend the New Years gathering.
