Apple recently released the latest golden master version of the developers edition of Mavericks OS X 10.9, meaning that the official launch for the public is imminent. The golden master version was released on October 3, and is expected to be the final release before being rolled out to consumers.

Apple also released the golden master build of Xcode 5.0.1, which developers can use to build apps for Mavericks.

Apple first introduced the Mavericks OS X at the WWDC in June earlier this year, and the Cupertino-based company finally looks to make it available to the public along with the launch of its new hardware – the Macbook Pro.

The new OS X comes boasting numerous new features including a new Maps app, a tabbed finder, iBooks, new look to the calendar, improved Safari, iCloud Keychain, multiple displays and more.

In 2012, the Mountain Lion OS X released on July 25, 2012 for $19.99. The previous year, Apple charged $29.99 to upgrade to OS X Lion. Although the iOS 7 upgrade was offered free for iDevice users this year, it is likely that Apple will charge or the OS X upgrade as in previous years.

However, with Windows offering existing Windows 8 users a free upgrade to Windows 8.1 this year, some are now touting that Apple may surprise customers by offering a free upgrade to the new Mavericks OS X. Others though, believe they know Apple better and that they will definitely charge something – likely the same as 2012 at $19.99, or at the very least $9.99 to cover some of their costs.

The new operating system is rumored to be released with the upgraded version of Macbook Pros and Macbook Pro with Retina Display – all of which are due to be upgraded.
