The Red Devils made it past the third round in the 2013-14 season where they reached the semifinals before losing heavily to West Ham United.

Last year, they did not even make it to the third round of the competition as they were eliminated by Milton Keynes Dons in the second round with a 4-0 scoreline.

Offering little resistance during that match, it was one of the bigger upsets last year and one nightmare that United were hoping to erase, which they did with this match.

On the other hand, Ipswich Town were hoping to bank on the possibility that United were not focused on the League Cup to pull off another upset and move on to the final stages as well.

Last year, they were eliminated in the first round of the competition as they were beaten 1-0 on extra time by Crawley Town.

This time, they entered the competition in the same round and faced Stevenage. They won 2-1 thanks to second-half goals from Joshua Yorwerth and Jay Tabb after they fell 1-0 at the end of the first half.

In the second round, they faced Doncaster Rovers and found themselves behind again after the first half.

Brett Pitman gave Ipswich Town some life with a goal in the 58th minute to extend the game and bring it to extra time.

With 30 minutes added, Ipswich Town took advantage of the tired Rovers and went on to score three goals inside 11 minutes as David McGoldrick, James Alabi and Ryan Fraser scored for the 4-1 win.

However, in this match, Ipswich Town failed to score any goals. Manchester United, in the meantime, was able to score three goals. Their first goal came 23 minutes into the game when Wayne Rooney scored. After halftime, at the 60th minute mark, Andreas Pereira, a midfielder, scored Manchester United's second goal. As the game was about to end, Anthony Martial scored United's third goal at the game's 90th minute.
