Marvel Unveils New Female Iron Man; Who Is Riri Williams? Character Development and Spoilers on the Iron Man Comics

The Marvel Universe has again taken another stunning twist as Marvel writer Brian Michael Bendis makes an announcement that will rock the story development of the beloved superhero Iron Man at the end of Civil War II.

In a Time Exclusive interview, comic book artist Stefano Caselli and Bendis revealed a new development in the Marvel Comics universe and the inspiration behind the huge progress in the storyline. "Civil War II" is said to end with Tony Stark, the man behind the Iron Man suit making a path for a new character, Riri Williams, to relinquish the image of the iconic superhero.

According to Bendis, he got the idea of Williams a couple of years ago during an unaired encounter in Chicago.

"And this story of this brilliant, young woman whose life was marred by tragedy that could have easily ended her life—just random street violence—and went off to college was very inspiring to me," says Bendis and described it as the "most modern version of superheroine story" that he has ever experienced. It was an inspiration that Bendis had to think through thoroughly until he finally came up wth the perfect setting and character personality.

Who is Riri Williams?

In the comics, Riri Williams is introduced as a 15–year-old African American student in MIT that impressed Stark when she reversed engineered one of his suits just inside her dormitory. When asked about the reaction of the Marvel fanbase, Bendis replied that they are getting good reception from people, and even those who are a bit unsure of the path the story's gonna take are giving the "benefit of the doubt."

Based on the interview, in the latest issue of "The Iron Man," Stark is already aware that a student in MIT is remaking his suit. With the wide plot opening up for Tony—his best friend dying, his company collapsing and his discovery about his real parents—the stress is going to take a toll on him. Relieving of the tension, Tony will look for the lady seen flying in the middle of America in an incomplete iron suit to find out more about her.

Bendis described Riri as someone with a different perspective from Stark, which makes her a very unique armor. He also hinted that she even might have a better brain than the experienced hero. Writer says that it would all make sense at the end of "Civil War II."
