People have eagerly waited for this release especially now that all are living the post-Prince era. Without even previously listening to instrumental tracks, he claimed to have studio recorded the songs "Listen Hear" and "Lost." He produced the melodies and he recorded every song with only one take subsequently.

Metacritic scored 'blackSUMMERS'night' with an astounding 85 out of 100. User scores show 7.6 out of only 12 ratings and counting. The Rolling Stones generously gave his new album a 4-star review mentioning that it was "pure pleasure." Entertainment Weekly on the other hand, gave him a metascore of 91. "It exudes enough confidence to let his heart show and to let his music grow in any direction his muse demands." Entertainment Weekly said.

Album overview

After giving a brief summary of what his new album is all about, he said that it would be on the darker side. He also claimed that it would have a more political edge; a threshold he has never been able to touch before. He considers his recent travels (Nigeria, Haiti, and Dominican Republic) as contributors to his recent music. Maxwell said that he used those kind of experiences to create certain songs for the album.

He has started his summer last June 18 in New Orleans in an event called the "Essence Festival."

As for the scene of R&B and Soul, Prince may have left his fans physically, but his music will be celebrated forever, according to Maxwell, It's a crucial step for someone from the same industry to continue and to be able preserve this legacy. He mentioned that it is indeed important to grasp the art-living musicianship and songwriting. He also said that instrumentation is still "in."

'Last of his kind'

Maxwell is a veteran artist who has always been and will never cease to deliver a legacy of his kind. A lot of musical fans are considering him to be the last of his kind.

Rooting from his neo-soul, 90's era, he was an essential vigor to the components of the era of dreamy R&B labels. His new song "Fingers Crossed" contains elements such as an instrumental horn outro that's light but falls flat as an entire composition.

Another is his song "Lost" which has a fuzzy guitar sound coming from underneath; and may be the most experimental piece Maxwell has ever created. His music is hailed all over the world which literally spells of indefinite artistry throughout the years and still hopefully, for the years to come.
