To the chagrin of some, it appears that the world will not be ending on December 21, 2012 and according to some scientists, not even the Mayans would have believed in such a fate.

There will be no world ending event, NASA has confidently predicted, according to reports. They are so confident, in fact, that the space center has already written up the article: "Why the World Didn't End Yesterday." The report is set to run on Friday.

Not even the Mayans would have seen December 21st, 2012 as doomsday, according to Live Science, who discovered the NASA report. Thursday marks the end of the 13th b'ak'tun of the ancient Maya Long Count Calendar, it is the last cycle that was marked by the Mayans. However, according to the Live Science report, the "Maya were well-prepared to record thousands upon thousands of years of time."

The end of a cycle for the Mayans, would have meant the beginning of a new cycle and not the end of the world, according to some scientists.

The doomsday theories are a Westernized concept, Lorenzo DiTommaso, a professor of religion at Concordia University in Montreal, told Live Science.

"The apocalyptic version got out on the Internet, and people started talking about it and modifying it and proposing things that could be added to it," DiTommaso said.

Some still argue, however, that the concern is not the end of the world but rather a drastic shift that will take place on the date 12/21/12. The fear, says one site, should be placed in the numbers and not just the date. The Advent of Deception argues that the numbers belong to the Illuminati, which means that "startling events" could begin to take place along with the start of the "New World Order."

It is also strange perhaps, that NASA would write such an article and still wait until Friday to publish it.
