Mayweather vs. Pacquiao Rematch Rumors: Freddie Roach Says 'Money' a Priority if 'PacMan' Returns?

A few from Pacquiao's close circle believe that a rematch would be taking place sometime in the future.

As of April 2016, eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao has retired from the sport of boxing, mainly to put his sole focus on being a public servant in his country of the Philippines.

"Pacman's" last bout was a rubber match against former WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley, where he ended his 20-year career on a high note via a convincing unanimous decision victory, scoring two official knockdowns in the process.

His long-time rival, Floyd Mayweather is also retired, having fought his last fight in September 2015 against former world champion Andre Berto. "Money Mayweather" won the fight via a wide-margined unanimous decision victory, keeping his undefeated record intact. Given the said scenario, it is highly unlikely that the world would see a part two between both fighters.

However, a few from Pacquiao's close circle believe that a rematch would be taking place sometime in the future. Top Rank chief Bob Arum himself had mentioned about the possibility of a rematch, as per ESPN, but at the same time, seemingly closed the door on it given Pacquiao's bigger obligations once he assumes office as a Philippine senator this July.

But for long-time trainer Freddie Roach, retirement would not be permanent, especially for an elite prizefighter like Pacquiao. In a report by Boxing Scene, the 55-year-old trainer says he is leaving the door open for his former fighter's return, adding that the rematch would be their top priority if Pacquiao does make a comeback.

"Maybe [Pacquiao will] be back, it might be possible," Roach said. "This all depends on how everything will unfold in his life. Becoming a senator, he may simply not have the time to still be a boxer."

"I think Mayweather will be a priority if Pacquiao decides to return," he continued. "I was not very happy with their first fight, but I think a new fight would be much better. I'd like to see them fight again."

For his part, Mayweather did drop a few hints about mounting a comeback but is leaning more towards a probable super fight against UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor. According to Bloody Elbow, Mayweather had stipulated, the said bout would be a boxing match.
