Measuring Blessings
When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, the king made a compact with them at Hebron before the LORD, and they anointed David king over Israel. (2 Samuel 5:3)
From the time he was anointed as a young boy, David knew that he would one day be king over all of Israel. In most ways (although not in all), David followed God’s will for his life, constantly seeking His guidance. His faithfulness was blessed with great riches and honor and power.
But does this mean that you can judge a person’s faithfulness to God by the amount financial success they have? Hardly. As in all things, God blesses different people in different ways for their faithfulness to Him. Some may have great financial success, this is true. But others may live in virtual poverty, their example proving an inspiration to others and their witness leading many to Jesus.

I once knew a woman who by the world’s standards was virtually worthless. She owned nothing except a few second-hand clothes. She lived with a family who took her in when they found her wandering the streets, lost and hungry and confused. They provided her a room in exchange for cleaning their home. She made other money for her needs by cleaning others’ homes. She was uneducated and not overly bright. But every time I saw her, she told me how blessed she was and how much God loved her. She positively glowed with the peace that He gave her. Never once was she beset by the frustrations most of us suffer. She was faithful to and blessed by her Lord.
How would you feel in her circumstances? Think about it.
