Michael Schumacher Condition Latest News: Good Progress as Driver Homeward Bound

Michael Schumacher, the former Formula One champion, has left the University Hospital of Lausanne in Switzerland and is now heading for home to continue his recovery program.

The racer's manager, Sabine Kehm, confirmed the news on Tuesday, saying that the F1 legend has still have to tread a long way to recovery.

"Considering the severe injuries he suffered, progress has been made in the past weeks and months," Kehm said in a statement. "There is still, however, a long and difficult road ahead."

Schumacher has been in the Swiss hospital after being transferred from a medical facility in France where he was placed in an induced coma following two brain surgeries. The surgeries were necessary in order for the massive blood clots from his brain to be removed.

The 45-year-old German was severely injured on a skiing accident while taking a holiday with his family last December in a resort of Meribel in the French Alps.

"We ask the privacy of Michael's family continue to be respected, and that speculation about his state of health is avoided," Schumacher's representative told the press.

Schumacher's manager, meanwhile, extended his gratitude to the entire medial team at CHUV Lausanne, a facility that is only a 24-mile drive away from the patient's Swiss residence.

"We would like to extend our gratitude to the entire team at CHUV Lausanne for their thorough and competent work," the rep continued.

CHUV's spokesman confirmed the dismissal of the patient saying that Schumacher was no longer under the institution's care, Sky News reported.

Michael Schumacher, with a 17-year racing career under his belt, has won seven drivers championships with 155 podium positions, 1566 points and 308 Grand Prix entries prior to the unfortunate event.
