Michele Bachmann: Miscarriage Helped Cement Pro-Life Stance

Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann told MORE Magazine in a recent interview that a miscarriage was what ultimately propelled her strong anti-abortion convictions and inspired her to take in foster children.

"I bring it up because it was a life changing moment for my husband and I," Bachmann told the publication. "Because that was really the moment when we opened ourselves up to the reality of how important children are...I think when that happened we were just profoundly struck by the value of every human being, and we wanted just to be open to have them. That also was a precursor to us being willing to have broken hearts for kids that come out of less than perfect circumstances. That’s not to condemn any of their parents or their extended family."

Bachmann said the hardship and loss was a new beginning her and that it made her want to fully devote herself to children who were less fortunate and came from broken homes.

"Kids who come out of a challenging situation need someone to be there," she said. "That’s maybe the beginning for us. It isn’t that we thought about foster care at that moment but I think something changed in us that we opened ourselves up to be more willing to pour our lives out for children. That was a change moment for us."

Bachmann first came out about the miscarriage in 2008 during a debate on the House Floor over an abortion bill and has mentioned it since then, though not frequently or in much detail.

"I thank my husband, who stood by me with our five babies and who stood by me when we lost a baby," she said during the debate. "I thank you for standing by me when we didn't know if we could go on anymore, and I thank you for stepping up to the plate, my husband, for being willing to bring 23 foster children into our home."
