Miley Cyrus Dead? Singer Shown Surrounded by Pills, Hoax Fools Fans

Miley Cyrus was the subject of a very convincing death hoax recently as fans of the "Wrecking Ball" singer were convinced she had died. Cyrus laid on the bed surrounded by pills in a recent music video, and scammers used the image for a death hoax.

The Miley Cyrus death hoax started with an article titled "{SHOCKING) Miley Cyrus Found Dead in Her Los Angeles Home! Country singer Miley Cyrus found overdosed this afternoon in her Los Angeles home," according to the Epoch Times.

Although the post didn't have much information in it, it was enough to fool some of the former Disney star's most loyal fans.

"My brother just came into my room and said Miley cyrus was dead, and I cried [immediately]! Who knew apparently I'd be real [emotional] if she died!" one fan tweeted not long after the hoax broke.

"Miley I miss you," another posted online reacting to her alleged death.

The perpetrators of the hoax used a still shot from the video "Blonde SuperFreak Steals the Magic Brain" with Flaming Lips and Moby that was released earlier this month. In the video she is on a bed surrounded with prescription pills, and it functioned as perfect fodder for the scammers. Once a curious reader clicked on the post, it redirected to a fake Facebook page that helped the scammers make money.

Fans were willing to believe the hoax because Cyrus hasn't posted anything on social media in four days, and because she was hospitalized last year for an allergic reaction to some medication.

Cyrus is apparently aware of the prank and has chosen not to respond on purpose. She thinks "it was actually pretty funny," one friend said.

"Miley is just laying low and hanging out with her new dog and just relaxing," an insider told HollywoodLife. "By not responding, she thinks it is that much more of a joke because people are continuing to believe it."
