"I am so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam," Cyrus told People.

Hemsworth is a native of Melbourne, Australia and his acting credentials include the recent blockbuster "The Hunger Games." He co-starred with Cyrus in the 2009 film "The Last Song."

In an interview earlier this year, Hemsworth told Details magazine that he fell in love with his future wife on the set of "The Last Song."

"What happened happened, and we've been together ever since," he said. "She makes me really happy. When you start, you want to be professional, but when you're filming those scenes with someone and pretending to love them, you're not human if you don't feel something," the Australian actor shared.

On Wednesday morning, Cyrus took to the social networking site Twitter to tweet to her followers "life is beautiful."

Celebrities and fans of the two stars have also taken to the social media website to comment on the engagement news.

"Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are engaged!! Oh my gosh congrats!" tween star Selena Gomez tweeted.

"Miley Cyrus will be Miley Hemsworth. My childhood is literally over," ‏@biebscyrusland tweeted.

"LOVE IS REAL AND TRU!!!! RT @Jezebel: Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are Engaged, Y'all!" ‏@kellylangstaff tweeted.

A wedding date for the young couple has not yet been set, according to a "Today" show report.
