Miley Cyrus' mother, Tish Cyrus, retweeted Bible verses after filing for divorce from Billy Ray, and Noah Cyrus, the younger sister of the former Disney star, urged prayers from her supporters.
Country singer Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus filed for divorce in L.A. Superior Court this week, citing "irreconcilable differences" after 19 years of marriage.
"This is a personal matter and we are working to find a resolution that is in the best interest of our family. We ask that you respect our privacy at this time," said Tish on Friday, according to People. Ray was separately quoted as saying, "This is a personal matter and we are doing what is in the best interest of our family. We ask that you respect our privacy at this time."
On Thursday, the day Ray and Tish filed the papers, Miley's 13-year-old sister and child actress Noah Cyrus tweeted, "Please pray for me and my family. Xxo."
Their mother Tish is asking for primary physical and legal custody of Noah with visitation for Ray, according to People. Tish is also requesting spousal support and wants Ray to pay her attorney's fees.
Tish retweeted messages with Bible verses after filing for divorce. "'In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.' – Jesus (John 16:33)," reads one of them. Another retweet, from Christian recording artist Tammy Trent, said: "God never promises the absence of storms. He just promises to walk with us through them!" Tish then tweeted, saying, "Thanks for that Tammy. You are the strongest women in the world. What u went thru makes my problems seem so small."
Responding to a Twitter user, Tish said, "God is so good. I know his plan for me is a good one."
Miley, 20, has indicated she hasn't been able to contact her dad. "@billyraycyrus since your text and email obviously aren't working would you like to talk like this?" she tweeted Friday. The she tweeted again, saying, "It's my twitter I can tweet what I want to #wecantstop."
Miley was raised as a Christian and was baptized in a Southern Baptist church before she moved to Hollywood in 2005. As a youngster, she regularly attended church and wore a purity ring.
Ray and Tish nearly separated in 2010, saying in a joint statement, "We are trying to work through some personal matters. We appreciate your thoughts and prayers." They have three children together, Miley, Braison and Noah. Ray also adopted Tish's children from a previous relationship, Brandi and Trace.
