Miley Cyrus' widely criticized MTV VMAs performance was reportedly inspired by Liam Hemsworth, a new report claims.
The former "Hannah Montana" star, 20, sparked outrage on Sunday when she took to the stage at Brooklyn's Barclays Center to perform with Robin Thicke during his hit song "Blurred Lines." Cyrus' lewd dance routine and skimpy costume left fans in shock and a new report claims that an earlier argument with her fiancé, 23, inspired her risqué performance.
"Miley and Liam had an argument the day of the show -- she was really upset and she took it all out onstage, so the performance got even crazier than they had planned because Miley was really amped up," a source told HollywoodLife.com.
While critics, including various Hollywood stars, slammed the pop star's over-the-top performance as "vulgar," reports claim she has no regrets.
"When she fights with Liam, she acts out and gets even more rebellious, and that came out on stage, but she's not sorry," the insider said. "She made a big impact and that was the goal. She did warn Liam that the show was going to be wild but even she didn't know just how wild it was going to be."
Hemsworth, who proposed to Cyrus in 2012 after three years of dating, was not present for Cyrus' disastrous performance and a source claims that the Australian actor's absence was a mutual decision between the pair.
"Miley knew her performance was going to be outside his comfort zone and she didn't want to be worrying about him in the audience and how he was going to react," the source said. "The whole thing was just another day of work for her, she wants her album to be number one and that means promoting the hell out of it."
Cyrus has not yet publicly addressed the widespread criticism surrounding her performance.
