Ministry Provides an Answer to AIDS Crisis in South Africa

January 26, 2004|12:27 pm

South Africa — Responding to HIV/AIDS crisis in South Africa, Evangelical Baptist Mission has broken ground on new property for Bethesda Outreach Ministries, a ministry that seeks to provide godly homes for children who have been orphaned because their parents have died from AIDS. Currently, almost 30 children are living in family settings at Bethesda.

UNAIDS, the United Nations AIDS body, estimates that almost 30 million people in sub-Saharan Africa are infected with the HIV virus. South Africa, widely acknowledged as the country hardest hit by AIDS, is estimated to have more than five million people who are HIV-positive in a population of 45 million.

AIDS is spreading rapidly that it has reached the point where the government is planning to form a specific government branch solely devoted to AIDS problems and solutions.
