Missing Blimp Found in Ohio Back Yard
A blimp that had gone missing due to strong storms Sunday morning has been discovered in the back yard of a 94-year-old Ohio resident.
The Hangar One Vodka blimp broke away from its fastening at the Ohio State University – Don Scott Airfield in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday night. The 128 foot blimp was torn loose after following powerful winds hitting the local area, police say.
The blimp found a resting place in a yard belonging to Lillian Bernhagen, who says she did not realize it had landed there until police knocked on her door Sunday morning.
WHIO TV News reported that the senior citizen heard a bang during the night, but had not thought anything was unusual because the weather forecast had indicated stormy weather. Upon seeing the huge white and blue blimp in her yard, Bernhagen was reportedly stunned.
Many law enforcement organizations including the Ohio State Police and state Patrol Aviation section were searching for the blimp until 7:30 Sunday morning when a resident in the nearby neighborhood of Worthington found it in his neighbor’s yard. East of the airfield, the blimp was blown to Worthington along the path of the storm that struck.
No one was aboard the blimp. Officials reported that the Federal Aviation Administration, Homeland Security, and the Transportation Security Administration were informed of the potential danger of the missing blimp.
The Hangar One Vodka distillery in St. George Spirits of Alameda, California immediately responded to phone calls Sunday about the missing blimp Sunday morning, the Cleveland Clear Channel reported.
The Spector 19, Model A blimp is on a tour of eastern and Midwest U.S. cities, according to the company’s website. Upon repair, the blimp will visit Detroit, Michigan on Thursday.
