Mom's Quadruplets Surprise Her, She Was Expecting Triplets: Identical Girls Are 'A Blessing,' She Says (VIDEO)

A mom's quadruplets surprised her when they were born, as she was expecting triplets to come on their Feb. 8 due date. The Mississippi family's new identical quadruplets are one of the rarest instances during childbirth.

The mom of the quadruplets is Kimberly Fugate, and she along with husband Craig were initially told by doctors that she was having triplets. But when she went into labor at 28 weeks at Winfred L. Wise Hospital for Women in Jackson, Miss., they discovered a 1-in-729,000 miracle— identical quadruplets.

"They had gotten the three out and they said, 'More feet,'" she told WAPT news after her caesarean section. "I said, 'No!' It was an instant shock."

The 42-year-old mother already has one daughter 10-year-old Katelyn, who is joined by Kenleigh Rosa, 2 pounds, 1 ounce; Kristen Sue, 2 pounds, 4 ounces; Kayleigh Peal, 2 pounds, 8 ounces; and Kelsey Roxanne, 2 pounds, 6 ounces. The newborns are all premature and are currently in the hospital under supervision.

"Typically, when babies are born prematurely, doctors tell the families to expect them to stay in the (neonatal intensive care unit) until their original due date, which in this case would be May 2," hospital spokeswoman Jennifer Hospodor told CNN. "It is possible that some or all of the girls would be stronger enough to go home before that, or have to stay longer. It depends on how they develop over the next 12 weeks."

Kelsey Roxanne had managed to hide behind her sisters throughout the ultrasounds, avoiding detection. Fugate's doctor, James Bofill, told The Clarion Ledger that he was "very embarrassed" by the mistake, which has never happened before in his 27-year career.

As for Kimberly Fugate, she said the children are "a blessing," as she was surprised to even be pregnant. She won't be having any more though.

"This. Is. It," she said.
