More Americans Disapprove of Gay Marriage, Survey Finds

A new survey by the University of New Hampshire found that half of Americans disapprove of same-sex marriages do not want their states to recognize gay marriage licenses obtained from Massachusetts.
According to a report by the Boston Globe on Sunday, a poll of 760 adults found that approximately 50 percent of Americans disapprove of same-sex marriage while only 37 percent approve; 11 percent are neutral.
Similarly, some 50 percent of Americans believe their states should not recognize the gay marriages from Massachusetts the only state where same-sex marriages are legal and 46 percent say it should be recognized.
Republicans, Protestants, regular churchgoers, Southerners and those older than 65, were more likely to oppose same-sex marriage. Meanwhile, Democrats, people who do not attend worship services regularly, and those under 35 were more likely support such unions.
The poll was conducted May 4-9 by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center and has a plus or minus 3.6 percent margin of error.
