'Mortal Kombat X' Beta Patch Gives Gamers New Characters But Not Nerfs and Buffs

Developer NetherRealm Studios has released a beta patch to its fighting game "Mortal Kombat X." The latest update grants access to new characters, but the community of "Mortal Kombat X" players has also reported some buffs and nerfs.

On Tuesday, Feb. 2, NetherRealm announced via its official Twitter handle that a new beta patch, Beta Ver. 3, is rolling out to Sony's PlayStation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One. The new update allows players to play as Kung Jin, Kung Lao, Shinnok, Cassie, Kitana, Kenshi, Raiden, and Kano. It also adds the Marketplace.

In addition, the beta patch seemed to have come with some changes that affect certain characters' gameplay. Although not mentioned in the official announcement, the "Mortal Kombat" community at Reddit has also reported some buffs and nerfs that affect tournament players.

In terms of nerfs, players noticed a significant change in Kung Lao's EX Hat attack. In the earlier version of "Mortal Kombat X," players say there were about 14 frames wherein Kung Lao could walk freely after the move was blocked. With the beta, this has been reduced to seven frames. As a result, the character's attack has less impact.

In addition, players have also noticed that the newly added Cassie is weaker than before. The community points to nerfs in her flip kick and armor as the cause of this.

On the other hand, other "Mortal Kombat X" fighters received some buffs. For instance, Kenshi's reflect is now faster and many of his special attacks have increased damage as well. His teleport can now also be paired with punches. Players may also want to try his new strings by pressing F21 and F214.

In addition, Kano can now throw from both offensive and defensive positions, thanks to the beta patch allowing him to tick throw from his F4 and B1 move. His DB1 is also faster down, after going down four frames from -9 to -5.

Announced last month, the "Mortal Kombat X" online beta aims to improve the game's netcode. Since the beta started, NetherRealm has also been unlocking characters for players to try before release.
