Moto X+1, G2, Moto 360 Review: Handsets Are More Stylish and Powerful Than Their Predecessors

The latest devices from Motorola Mobility were revealed at the recent 2014 IFA Consumer's Electronics Affair in Berlin: the Moto X+1 (or Moto X 2nd Gen), Moto G2 (or Moto G 2nd Gen) and the Moto 360.

It can sounds a bit confusing, but the 2014 Moto X and 2014 Moto G are simple improvements over their predecessors.

First off, the new Moto X sees the substantial growth in size as it is now sporting a 5.2 inch 1080p Full HD resolution display compared to the previous device's 4.7-inch 720p spec.

Set in all-new aluminum frame, the Moto X 2014 "feels more premium," as PC Advisor put it. Currently running on KitKat 4.4, Motorola promises timely updates for the software of all their devices.

Performance-wise, the new flagship boasts a 2.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor with Adreno 330 graphics. It has 16GB of storage, though there's no available support for memory expansions.

ZDNet also pointed out the new Moto X's rebranding and reinventing of some of its signature software. From Touchless Control it is now Moto Voice; Active Display to Moto Display; Motorola Assist to Moto Assist; and more others.

Other tech review sites also pointed out the improvement of the camera software with the introduction of the Highlight Reel and the battery from 2200 to 2300mAh with "turbo charging" capacity.

Moto G 2014

Another second-generation from Motorola, the Moto G remains the "best budget smartphone" with bigger display, better speakers and dual SIM slots. However, to give way for such improvements, the 4G capability has been taken for 3G instead.

Digit. In expressed their verdict by saying that though the new Moto G is still a "very good smartphone" it somehow loses its class as it could now be easily out bested by other "non-popular" budget phones like the Xiaomi Mi3 and Micromax Canvas Nitro.

"The only thing the new Moto G has over these devices is brand recognition," the site said.

Processor specs are still the same with the former with 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core SoC and 1GB of RAM. The camera, on the other hand, improves from 5 MP to 8 MP paired with a 2MP front snapper.

Moto 360

"The first smartwatch you'd actually want to own," said PC Advisor. Stunning-looking and packed with features any Android fan would love, the new Moto 360 truly lives up to the hype that surrounds it before it was released.

Reportedly sold out on the first day, the latest smartwatch from Motorola is extremely light though it feels solid as it is made from stainless steel. The faceplate, one of its most attractive features, is made of Gorilla Glass and has a 1.5-inch LCD display that is bright and has a "good contrast and viewing angles."

Under the hood, the Moto 360 bears a Ti OMAP 3 processor, 512 of RAM, and 4GB of internal storage. It also has a Blutooth 4.0 LE connectivity option.

It has also been reported to have IP67 rating, meaning it is waterproof and can be worn while swimming for up to 30 minutes.

Running on Android Wear, it features Motorola Connect app where it allows the device to be connected to computers and mobile devices. It also allows the user to customize the watch's face.

Like the watches from Samsung and LG (and with Apple's too), the Moto 360 has wellness features like heart rate monitor and pedometer.

Drawbacks of the new smart time piece include "one day typical battery life" and few user apps given at the moment.

Release Dates

The Moto X 2nd Gen is currently only available on AT&T and is now ready for pre-orders. The Moto G 2014, on the other hand, can only be purchased without a contract at a Motorola Store. Meanwhile, Moto 360 is, as of the moment, out of stock in Best Buy, but is available for pre-order at Verizon with Oct. 27 as shipping date.
