Mr. Robot Season 2 Episode 4 Recap: Elliot comes to a realization regarding Mr. Robot and himself

The origin of the Mr. Robot mask is told. Elliot once again logs in to the IRC.

Mr. Robot Season 2 episode 4 titled "eps2.2init1.asec", opened with a flashback that answered some questions that were not yet even on the show's viewers' minds.

The Mask's Origin

It was a scene from the Season 1 finale where Darlene came knocking on Elliot's apartment door sporting a Halloween mask from an obscure movie they often watched together. This scene wittingly gives the origin of the Mr. Robot mask.

Elliot then slipped into his father's work jacket and put on the mask. Darlene was surprised to hear Elliot's plan to take down E Corp. With that, the flashback ends.

Darlene Needs Help

Present time, Darlene pays Elliot a visit at his mother's house like what she promised Mobely and Trenton. She did not tell Elliot what's been happening in the outside world including Romeo's murder. She also did not mention that the FBI has found their home base.

As Elliot has always told her, it was always the "after" part of the hack that is the most difficult. Darlene desperately needs Elliot's expertise but she went on telling Elliot this indirectly.

Checkmate

Elliot does seem to be fragile and continues to have an internal struggle with Mr. Robot being a part of his life. Ray urged Elliot for him and his other self play a chess match with the condition that if Elliot wins, Mr. Robot goes away for Elliot to finally have peace. However, Elliot will lose more than the three days he had already lost after the hack. He will have to fall into the black hole forever.

Every time, their chess match ends in a stalemate. Mr. Robot points out that it will always be that way since Elliot will always know the next move he will make against himself. It just goes to show that Elliot and Mr. Robot need each other.

Later, when Elliot finally went online after Darlene beseeched him and not Mr. Robot, she tells him about Romeo's murder and the FBI surveillance. Now knowing the bigger picture, he turns to Ray and under the guise of helping Darlene, he once again logs in to the IRC channel.
